Peggy’s ready to take our Minnesota values to D.C. — to fight to rebuild the middle class, protect our rights, and hold the extremist billionaires trying to run off with our country accountable. If elected, she’ll be the first Native American woman to ever serve in the U.S. Senate. Will you join us in this Minnesotan-powered campaign?

Peggy Flanagan believes Minnesota is a potluck state. People can come from all walks of life and have different experiences. Yet Minnesotans share the same values. If it snows, we’ll help you shovel your driveway. If you move into the neighborhood, we’ll bring you a hotdish.
Peggy is running for the U.S. Senate because she loves Minnesota. And throughout her career in state and local government, and as the head of Children’s Defense Fund–Minnesota, she has seen the impact the federal government can have on people’s everyday lives. She has also lived it.
Raised by a single mom in her hometown of St. Louis Park, Peggy had a home because of a Section 8 housing voucher. Other public programs helped Peggy’s mom, Pat, pay for school lunch, health insurance coverage, and child care–which ultimately allowed Pat to go back to school at St. Kate’s to become a phlebotomist.
This career move helped lift Peggy and her mom into the middle class. This experience, along with her Catholic faith, has informed Peggy’s belief that we should wrap our arms around our neighbors in need. Today, she gets to pay back that investment that others made in her family through public service.
Peggy is accustomed to working across communities and areas of difference. She understands how to have the critical conversations in our neighborhoods that result in policies Minnesotans need to make their lives better.
Peggy is currently Minnesota’s 50th Lieutenant Governor. It has been the honor of her lifetime to serve people from every walk of life and every corner of the state.
In choosing Peggy to serve with him, Governor Tim Walz saw the opportunity to serve the people of Minnesota in an even greater capacity by creating two leadership positions at the Capitol. And it worked, building off the model created by Governor Mark Dayton and then-Lieutenant Governor Tina Smith.
Alongside Governor Walz, Peggy has delivered the largest tax cut in Minnesota history; made transformative investments in education, small businesses, and child care; and made the state a national leader in agriculture innovation. The Walz-Flanagan team produced balanced budgets while working with a divided legislature, which positioned them to deliver for Minnesotans in historic ways throughout the 2023 legislative session. Walz tasked Peggy with championing the issues that most impacted children and families, including paid family and medical leave, a historic billion-dollar investment in housing, and free school meals.
Peggy is of Irish and Indigenous heritage. She is an enrolled member of the White Earth Nation. Her Anishinaabe name, Gizhiiwewidamookwe, means ‘speaks in a loud and clear voice woman.’ She has spent her career using her loud and clear voice to make life better for Minnesotans. For her, running for Senate is the next step. Her grandmother was one of the first women who worked for the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. Her mother worked on the Hubert Humphrey for President campaign in 1968, just out of high school. And Peggy spent Halloween as a three-year-old handing out literature (and receiving candy!) for her aunt’s state senate campaign.
Elected in 2015 to the Minnesota House of Representatives, Peggy served as the lead on the Subcommittee on Child Care Access and Affordability. In 2017, she joined her legislative colleagues to form the POCI (People of Color and Indigenous) Caucus. Together, the caucus works to improve the education, health, and economic opportunities for people of color and Indigenous communities across the state. During the 2017-18 session, when her party was in the minority, Peggy was one of only two Democrats to successfully chief author a bill that became law.
Prior to serving the legislature, Peggy was executive director of Children’s Defense Fund–Minnesota, a non-profit advocacy organization focused on the well-being of kids so children, families and communities can flourish. There, she co-chaired the Raise the Wage Coalition that raised Minnesota’s minimum wage in 2014 for the first time in nearly a decade. Peggy was also a partner at The Management Center, where she advised and trained executives and organizational leaders on effective results-driven management.
After working on the late Senator Paul Wellstone’s campaign in 2002, Peggy went to work at Wellstone Action, the organization founded to carry on Wellstone’s work to empower people from all walks of life to engage in civic life. As one of the original trainers of Wellstone Action’s signature program Camp Wellstone, she trained tens of thousands of community organizers, elected officials, and candidates across the country – including future Governor Tim Walz. Peggy also served on the Minneapolis School Board from 2005-2009, driven by her desire to ensure all children have access to a high quality education.
In December 2023, she was elected by her peers to chair the Democratic Lieutenant Governors Association (DLGA), making her the first Native American woman to ever chair a national political committee. Under Peggy’s leadership, the DLGA tripled in growth and won elections across the country. She was also named co-chair of the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
Peggy lives in St. Louis Park with her husband, Tom, her daughter, Siobhan, and their dog, Reuben. She is a proud graduate of the University of Minnesota!
